A petition dated August 22 by one Mr. Osazee Iyamu and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor explained that he personally witnessed the removal of the tiles, valued at about N5million, for the construction of the sports hall.
He insisted that the project, which was part of the N100 million grant by the Education Tax Fund (ETF) to the school for the hosting of the 2010 Nigeria Universities Games (NUGA), were paid for by the university, but due to change in specification, they were not used.
Iyamu wrote that the tiles were stacked in one of the stores in the building after the sports hall was eventually completed with screed floor.
Continuing, he alleged that the contractor with "someone in the university arranged and removed the tiles" with the belief that everything about the tiles have been forgotten by the authorities, three years after the school hosted the sports fiesta.
Titled "Removal of Tiles from the Indoor Hall of the University of Benin", the petitioner who described himself as a "sports enthusiast" said that there was a gate pass which the contractor presented to the curious security men at the main gate of the institution at Ugbowo before they allowed him to drive past.
Iyamu said: "It will be unwise for anyone to pretend not to know that these materials, already paid for by the university according to conditions of contract (section article 14), were illegally removed."
He concluded by appealing to the Vice-Chancellor to order the investigation of the matter with a view to recovering the tiles.
The institution's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Osaze Osarenren, said that he was yet to be briefed on the petition but gave assurance that appropriate measures will be taken if the allegations are found to be true.
