NUGA 2014: six athletes faint

About six athletes fainted in separate events as the Nigerian University Games got more competitive on Wednesday.

One of them, Ruth from Kogi State University fainted while featuring in a 400metre race while the other, a judoka from Federal University of Technology, Owerri fainted after getting serious beating from his counterpart from Obafemi Awolowo University.

A medical official, who did not give his name because he was not authorised to speak, said that no fewer than six other participants had fainted since sporting activities began on Monday.

One of Ruth's teammate told our correspondent that she fainted due to lack of strength and stamina. It was gathered that she had earlier complained of being weak but could not be replaced in the race.

Ruth, who fell a few minutes after the event started, was immediately attended to by officials of the Red Cross Society. While receiving treatment, she told medical officials that she took light food before the race.

When asked what she took as breakfast, Ruth replied, "Tea, tea and biscuit."

Also, a taekwondoist representing OAU in the heavyweight (male) category, Olaniyan Hafiz, sustained injury after defeating his opponent from University of Lagos, Abiodun Martins, by 12 points to 4.

Hafiz, who had a chest injury was initially taken to OAU Health Centre but later transferred to the OAU Teaching Hospital for an X-ray examination.
