On the 27th of september, 2014 Senate withdrew the appointment of a former Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Andrew Onokerhoraye, as professor emeritus.
They cited as reasons for the withdrawal his alleged failure to carry out his responsibilities as professor emeritus in the university and alleged failure to attend meetings.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer of UNIBEN, Harris Osarenren, said the decision was taken at the special meeting of the Senate held on Wednesday.
"The action of the Senate, which has been hailed by a cross section of the University of Benin community, was influenced by the facts that he had defaulted in carrying out his responsibilities as professor emeritus. More importantly, Senate observed with dismay that, since his appointment as professor emeritus, he was never present at meetings". The UNIBEN Senate, at its meeting, held on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, had appointed Onokerhoraye as professor emeritus in the Department of Geography and Regional Planning, Faculty of Social Sciences.
